Bubba Smith of 'Police Academy' died of acute drug intoxication
Bubba Smith, a former NFL player who is likely best known for his role in the "Police Academy Series" died of acute drug intoxication and other conditions, according to the Associated Press.
The Los Angeles County coroner's office announced their findings on Wednesday, November 2. The autopsy results revealed that the 6-foot-7 actor had high levels of the weight-loss drug phentermine in his system.
In addition to the drug, Smith also had heart disease, an enlarged heart and up to 75 percent blockage of some blood vessels.
The actor was found dead at the age of 66 in his Baldwin Hills home by a caretaker on August 3.
Smith was born in Texas as Charles Aaron "Bubba" Smith. In the "Police Academy" films, he played Cadet Moses Hightower. The movies told of a group of misfit cop cadets.
The first 1984 film starred Steve Guttenberg and "Sex and the City" actress Kim Cattrall. Actor, comedian and director Bobcat Goldthwait also appeared in several "Police Academy" films.
"Bubba was a sweet and honest man who told hilarious stories and took no bull," Goldthwait told OnTheRedCarpet.com in a statement on August 3. "He will be missed."
Smith began his on-screen acting career in the late 1970s and appeared on shows such as "Charlie's Angels," "The New Adventures of Wonder Woman," "Taxi," "Married with Children" and "MacGyver."
In 1983, just before the release of the first "Police Academy" film, Smith famously stripped down for the nude magazine Playgirl.
His last known role was in the 2010 independent movie "DaZe: Vol Too," which also stars "Twilight" actor Jackson Rathbone and Gary Busey.
Smith played football at Michigan State University in the 1960s and later became an NFL defensive end and tackle for the Baltimore Colts, Oakland Raiders and Houston Oilers.
