Brooke Shields wields cane after suffering a knee injury

05/09/2012 by Olivia Allin

Brooke Shields turned heads at Monday's Met Costume Institute Gala, but it was partially because of the black cane at her side.

The 46-year-old actress, who wore a J. Mendel gown to the annual event, suffered a torn meniscus in her knee while portraying Morticia Addams in the hit Broadway musical comedy, "The Addams Family."

Shields told E! News that the injury is "not a big deal, it's inconvenient," but joked that the Met Museum's staircase "didn't help" her injury.

This year's Met gala benefit celebrated Elsa Schiaparelli and Miuccia Prada. Other guests included Beyonce, Gwyneth Paltrow, Cameron Diaz, Emma Stone, Rooney Mara, Scarlett Johansson, Darren Criss, Justin Timberlake and Jessica Biel. See photos of the arrivals.

Shields took over the role of Morticia from Bebe Neuwirth last June and was originally slated to continue her run through October, but has remained in the cast, starring opposite Tony Award winner Roger Rees ("Nicholas Nickleby"), who plays Gomez in the musical.

"When the producers asked me to come see the show a few months ago, I found it to be wonderfully entertaining, funny, clever and even touching, and I knew immediately that I wanted to be the next Morticia, following the amazing Bebe Neuwirth. I can't wait to join Roger and the wonderful cast," the actress said in a statement at the time.

Shields has previously appeared on Broadway in "Wonderful Town," "Chicago" and "Cabaret." The actress made her Broadway debut in 1994 as Rizzo in "Grease."

Shields rose to fame as a child and teen star, appearing in the 1980 movie "The Blue Lagoon" and modeling for Calvin Klein ads.

After studying Romance languages and literature at Princeton University and graduating with honors, Shields went on to appear in small films and guest-star on show such as "Tales From the Crypt" and "Quantum Leap" until she landed her own sitcom, "Suddenly Susan," in 1996. She has also had regular roles in shows such as "Lipstick Jungle."
