Brooke Burke-Charvet confirms thyroid cancer diagnosis

11/08/2012 by Olivia Allin

Brooke Burke-Charvet has confirmed that she was diagnosed with thyroid cancer.

"I need to have thyroid surgery and a thyroidectomy, which means I'm going to have a nice, big scar right here on neck," Burke-Charvet said in a YouTube video posted on her parenting blog, Modernmom.com. "And, I don't get to just walk around and pretend that nothing happened and not follow up and not share it because it's going to be pretty much dead center."

The host and model said that she has scheduled a thyroidectomy to remove part or all of the thyroid gland, but is ready to take on the diagnosis and do whatever she has to do to get through it.

"I'm ready to deal with it, and I'm going to be fine," Burke-Charvet said. "I feel really, really strong."

The "Dancing With The Stars" host said that she is a little worried about the inevitable scar left from her impending surgery.

The 41-year-old host told fans in July that her doctor suggested she undergo a thyroid ultrasound and a biopsy, after he felt a lump in her neck during a routine physical exam.

She was previously diagnosed with Hashimoto's disease, which means her thyroid doesn't function properly. She was taking a synthetic thyroid pill daily.

According to the Mayo Clinic, the thyroid is a butterfly-shaped gland at the base of the neck, which produces hormones that regulate your heart rate, blood pressure, body temperature and weight.

Thyroid cancer is usually treated with surgery to remove the thyroid and radiation, which is often done with a radioactive iodine pill. Following removal, the patient must take pills to mimic the hormones created in the thyroid.

There are several types of thyroid cancer including papillary carcinoma (which accounts 80 percent of cases), follicular carcinoma, medullary thyroid carcinoma, anaplastic carcinoma, thyroid lymphoma and thyroid sarcoma.

The survival rate for those diagnosed with stage I or II thyroid cancer is close to 100 percent. Those with stage IV thyroid cancer have a survival rate between 7 and 51 percent, according to the American Cancer Society.

Burke and David Charvet wed in August 2011 in a secret ceremony in St. Barts after a five-year engagement.

The two are parents to son Shaya Braven, 3, and daughter Heaven Rain, 4. Burke is also mom to daughters Sierra Sky, 9 and Neriah, 11, from her previous marriage to plastic surgeon Garth Fisher, who she divorced in 2006.

Before she began hosting "Dancing With The Stars" in 2010, Burke appeared as a contestant and won the seventh season of the ABC dancing competition with partner Derek Hough. Aside from her "Dancing With The Stars" duties, Burke also runs the parenting blog ModernMom.com and wrote "The Naked Mom."
