Britney Spears releases new song 'Perfume' (Listen, Poll)
Britney Spears gave fans a peak into just how personal her new album, "Britney Jean," will be with the release of the song "Perfume."
Spears released the track on her official Facebook page on Sunday, Nov. 3, where she said, "This is like sharing a piece of my heart. Listen to Perfume now!"
Prior to the release of the song, Spears teased fans about the track's emotional significance, posting the song's single art with a quote from an interview with E! Online.
"'Perfume' is incredibly special to me because it hits close to home, and I think the story is relateable to everyone," Spears said to E! Online. "Everyone's been through an insecure moment in a relationship that's left them vulnerable and I think this song captures that."
The song, an emotional ballad co-written by Spears, singer/songwriter Sia and co-produced by Will.I.Am, is a departure from Spears' typical releases, differing drastically from the single "Work B----", released in September. That same month, Spears also announced her Las Vegas residency show, "Britney: Piece of Me," on "Good Morning America."
Lyrics from the song include, "I want to believe it's just you and me / Sometimes it feels like there's three of us in here baby / So I wait for you to call, and I try to act natural / Have you been thinking 'bout her or about me."
"Perfume" echoes Spears' recent comments about her upcoming eighth studio album, "Britney Jean," being her most personal album to date. In September, Spears revealed that her split from ex-fiance, Jason Trawick, inspired material on the LP, due in stores on Dec. 3.
"I have been through a lot in the past few years and it has really inspired me to dig deeper and write songs that I think everyone can relate to," Spears wrote in an open letter to her fans on Oct. 25. "I want to show you the different sides of Britney Spears. I am a performer. I am a Mom. I am funny. I am your friend! I am Britney Jean."
