Bradley Cooper is set to star as Lucifer in a screen adaptation of the classic 17th century poem "Paradise Lost," which will be filmed in Sydney.

The government of New South Wales announced Wednesday that the film will be directed by Australian Alex Proyas, according to the Associated Press.

Proyas has directed films such as "I, Robot" and "Knowing."

"Paradise Lost," by English poet John Milton, tells the story of Satan as he tempts Adam and Eve.

The film will be shot at Sydney's Fox Studios and is targeted for release in 2013. Production was reportedly brought to Sydney due to financial incentives from the state government.

Cooper, 36, is known for his role in the "Hangover" films. Cooper's film debut was in the cult classic comedy, "Wet Hot American Summer." He has since appeared in films like "He's Just Not That Into You," "The A-Team" and "Limitless."

The actor recently revealed his ambitions to write and possibly direct a film adaptation of the science fiction novel "Hyperion" by Dan Simmons.
