Bobby Brown, ex-husband of the late Whitney Houston, was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence on Monday, March 26.

A California Highway Patrol spokesperson said officers saw Brown talking on his cell phone and pulled him over in Van Nuys, located in Los Angeles Country's San Fernando Valley, around 12:20 p.m. He then failed a field sobriety test. It is illegal to use a hand-hand device to speak or text in California.

Brown was released on his own recognizance after about two hours. He has not commented.

The 43-year-old New Edition singer has battled substance abuse for years and has a prior DUI conviction from 1996. He pleaded guilty to the charge six years later and was sentenced to eight days in jail. In 2004, he was sentenced to 60 days behind bars for violating his probation, months after he was arrested and charged with battery following a domestic dispute with Houston.

In 2008, he was sentenced to a year of community service after police found him in an SUV in possession of a small amount of cocaine.
