The next season of "Boardwalk Empire" will be its last, HBO has announced.

The cable network said in a statement to OTRC.com on Thursday, Jan. 9, that the Emmy-winning series, which stars Steve Buscemi, will end its run after its upcoming fifth installment, which premieres in the fall. The new season was announced in September.

"We're thrilled to get the go-ahead for a fifth season of 'Boardwalk Empire," said creator Terry Winter. "After much discussion with my creative team and HBO, we've decided to wrap up the series after such a great run and look forward to bringing it to a powerful and exciting conclusion."

"Boardwalk Empire" debuted in 2010 and stars Buscemi as Enoch "Nucky" Thompson, a corrupt political leader and gangster in Atlantic City during the Prohibition era. The series has won 17 Emmys, including Best Television Series - Drama and Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series - Drama for Buscemi in 2011.
