Blake Lively and Penn Badgley of 'Gossip Girl' split

Left: Penn Badgley in an interview with 'On The Red Carpet' (KABC) Right: Blake Lively in a production still from 'Gossip Girl' (CW) Gossip Girl co-stars Blake Lively and Penn Badgley - who play on-and-off couple of Serena van der Woodsen and Dan Humphrey - have ended their off-screen romance, reports People.

The stars, both 23, first went public with their relationship in 2008. Lively, who is featured on the October cover of Allure, told the magazine, "I don't comment on my relationships." She added, "My anonymity is something I treasure. Wanting to be an actor and wanting to be famous are different."

Livelys film career is beginning to heat up. The young actress caught the attention of critics in the praised Ben Affleck movie The Town and is set to star in another huge film, Green Lantern. It was a very different experience, Lively told MTV about her work on The Town in comparison to Green Lantern. but both [movies] I just treasure so much.

In The Town, a group of thieves, two of which are played by Affleck and Jeremy Renner, hold up a Boston bank. One of them falls in love with its manager and later pursues her unmasked as he is tracked by an FBI agent, played by Mad Men's Jon Hamm. Lively plays the sister and ex-girlfriend of Renner's and Affleck's characters.

"This part was originally supposed to be for a 37-year-old woman - she's a mother - but when I read the script, I knew I had to have the part," Lively told Allure.

She also plays Carol Ferris in the superhero movie The Green Lantern, alongside Ryan Reynolds, who plays the main character. The film is set for release on June 17, 2011.

Badgley, meanwhile recently co-starred with Emma Stone in Easy A.
