Billie Joe Armstrong opens up about substance abuse, 'complete blackout'
Green Day frontman Billie Joe Armstrong has broken his silence regarding his substance abuse and rehab stint last year, which followed a widely-publicized on-stage meltdown at the iHeartRadio Festival in Las Vegas.
The 41-year-old told Rolling Stone in an interview set to be published in the magazine's Friday print edition that his addiction got so bad that he "couldn't predict" where he "was going to end up at the end of the night."
"I'd wake up in a strange house on a couch," he said, according to excerpts posted on the outlet's website on February 26. "I wouldn't remember how. It was a complete blackout."
In late September 2012, Armstrong shocked fans when he unleashed an expletive-filled rant while performing with the band at the gig. He and his fellow musicians smashed instruments and he also made reference to teen pop star Justin Bieber. (Watch the video here - warning: contains explicit language).
Following the incident, the rocker entered a rehab center to treat "substance abuse" and Green Day canceled a 2012 tour out of concern for his health and postponed several 2013 concerts.
More details about Armstrong's addiction have not been disclosed. The singer was once arrested for DUI in 2003.
Armstrong told Rolling Stone he remembers "tiny things" about his stage meltdown and that his wife, Adrienne, told him it was "bad." He said he phoned his manager and that he was the one who told him to begin rehab, "immediately."
