Bette Midler set to ring in the New Year with an HBO special -- see video
Bette Midler is set to ring in the New Year with her very own HBO special titled "The Showgirl Must Go On," a taping of her live stage show the singer and actress has been performing at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas over the years, reports Reuters.
Midler spoke to the wire service about her show, where viewers will see her donning elaborate costumes as she sings her popular hits like "Wind Beneath My Wings."
"It's not so easy, but the crowds are different every night and every crowd becomes a beast of its own," Midler says. "There's an ebb and flow between the crowd and the entertainer that really keeps you on your toes, and this changes with every performance. I think that's what keeps a song fresh."
Throughout her career, Midler has been honored with several awards including several Grammy, Emmy, and Golden Globe awards as well as a Tony. She has also sold over 30 million records.
What is the key to her success? "I don't do everything that comes my way," she says before adding, "I tend to do things in spurts. I'll be really busy and then just collapse, take a break for a year or two and then come roaring back. I'm not sure if that's how you achieve longevity, but I tend to sift through things and make sure they are things I really want to do."
As for what her future holds, Midler says she's still trying to get a handle on how the world communicates now. "It's a different world now, with the Internet, iTunes, YouTube, Twitter -- all this stuff which is so different from what I do and I really don't know where I fit in it. I feel if you can entertain a group of people live, you're really going to be okay, and I've always been able to do that."
Midler's special, "The Showgirl Must Go On" airs on December 31 on HBO. Check out a preview below:
