Bette Midler accuses Lady Gaga of stealing her mermaid in a wheelchair routine
Bette Midler is more than peeved that Lady Gaga has usurped her mermaid in a wheelchair routine, which has been part of her act since the '80s and lashed out at the singer on Twitter.
"I'm not sure @ladygaga knows that I've performed my mermaid in a wheelchair for millions of people - and many of them are still alive," Midler tweeted on Friday. "Dear @ladygaga if you think a mermaid in a wheelchair seems familiar - it's because it is! You can see it on YouTube 24/7 - with ME performing it."
Bette Midler has performed her Delores DeLago mermaid routine for over 30-years in stage shows across the country.
Midler kept going on Saturday, adding, "Dear @ladygaga I've been doing singing mermaid in a wheelchair since 1980 - You can keep the meat dress and the firecracker (expletive) - mermaid's mine."
Gaga debuted her wheelchair-bound mermaid alter ego named Yuyi while performing "You and I" at Sydney's Town Hall last week and received criticism from disability activists who said using a wheelchair "for shock value" was offensive, E! Online reports.
The pop star revealed that Yuyi will be featured in the next single from her blockbuster "Born This Way" album.
"Next video in just days. So passionate about the concept. Can't sleep. Visions of a surreal love. #YuyiIsReal. If you want her to be," Gaga wrote on Twitter on July 15.
Midler seemed to have forgiven the pop star by Sunday, writing, "@ladygaga, let's drink this over at the Emmys in September. Fabulous mermaids can coexist!"
Gaga's HBO special, "Monster Ball Tour at Madison Square Garden" was nominated for five Emmy Awards, while Bette Midler was nominated for her HBO special, "Bette Midler: The Showgirl Must Go On."
