Benedict Cumberbatch recites R. Kelly lyrics (Video)
Jimmy Kimmel put Benedict Cumberbatch's deep baritone voice to good use last night when the actor appeared on his late-night show to promote "The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug."
Kimmel had the 37-year-old British actor recite the lyrics to the new R. Kelly song "Genius," which is off the singer's latest album. Video of Cumberbatch's performance of the song, as well as his interview on the show can be viewed below (Warning: Video contains censored expletives and sexually implicit lyrics).
The actor, whose appearance on the show was marked by loud cheers from the crowd, talked about joining popular fan franchises like "The Hobbit" and "Star Trek." He recently appeared in "Star Trek Into Darkness" as the infamous villain Khan.
"You can't go in trying to please everyone, you just have to just kind of fulfill the promise the director, or whoever it is that's hired you, had in you and you just, you know -- that's the thing you're serving on a daily basis and your fellow cast and the script," Cumberbatch said. "I think if every day I stepped on set as Khan in 'Star Trek' and thought about what Khan meant to Trekkies, I would have just -- I would have cried and run home."
The actor then joked, "I can hear a lot of Trekkies going, 'I wish you had done, man!'"
Cumberbatch voices the dragon Smaug in the new "Hobbit" film and he talked about doing some of the motion capture acting for the character too, which led to more cheers from the audience.
"Maybe they're imagining you in one of those tight bodysuits," Kimmel told a confused Cumberbatch.
"My fandom would just evaporate if you saw me in that bodysuit," the actor replied.
The actor is set to return to the small screen in the U.S. when "Sherlock" season 3 starts to air on Masterpiece on PBS starting on Jan. 19, 2014. (Check out PHOTOS from the show's third season here.)
"The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug" hits theaters on Dec. 13. Watch Cumberbatch's appearance on "Jimmy Kimmel Live!" below.
