'Beginners,' 'Tree of Life' tie at Gotham Independent Film Awards

Two films tied for a high honor at the 21st Annual Gotham Independent Film Awards in New York City Monday night.

"The Tree of Life," starring Brad Pitt and Sean Penn, and "Beginners," starring Ewan McGregor and Christopher Plummer, shared the award for Best Feature.

Natalie Portman announced the unprecedented ruling in a prerecorded video, saying that her peers couldn't choose between the two so they decided to honor both, according to the Associated Press.

The event was hosted by Edie Falco and Oliver Platt. Other winners included Felicity Jones for Breakthrough Actor in "Like Crazy," the cast of "Beginners" for Ensemble Cast, and "Girlfriend" for Audience Award.
