Beastie Boys sign book deal, a 'multidimensional' memoir

Will the Beastie Boys become "Beastie" sellers?

The award-winning hip hop group has plans to write a memoir, according to the New York Times.

The Beastie Boys, which formed in 1981 in New York City, have signed a book deal with Spiegel & Grau, a subsidiary of the prominent publishing company Random House. The memoir is set to be released in the fall of 2015.

The agreement was signed by band members Adam Horovitz (Ad-Rock) and Michael Diamond (Mike D). The band's third member, Adam Yauch (MCA), passed away in May 2012 after a three-year struggle with salivary gland cancer. He was 47 years old.

True to their creative and experimental roots, the Beastie Boys plan to eschew a linear narrative form in favor of a "multidimensional experience," according to Julie Grau, the head of Spiegel & Grau.

"There is a kaleidoscopic frame of reference, and it asks a reader to keep up," Grau told the New York Times.

Edited by journalist Sacha Jenkins, who founded the hip hop magazine ego trip, the memoir will be a melange of visual and audio elements, and will include references to pop culture and humor as well as contributions by several writers.

Grau equated the memoir to Grand Royal, a snarky magazine created by the Beastie Boys that focused on lambasting pop culture. A 1995 article from the publication, "Mulling Over the Mullet," is credited with popularizing the term for "mullet," a men's hairstyle that exhibits short front locks in juxtaposition with hair grown long in the back. The term also gained prominence from the band's song "Mullet Head," according to CNN.

In its mission statement, Spiegel & Grau, which has also published a memoir by Jay-Z, described its objective to be on the "frontline" of the publishing world and "open to new forms of expression."

"Our goal is to realize and enhance each author's vision, by bringing to each publication--from the editorial process to the book's physical packaging to its launch into the world--the same level of energy, creativity, and ambition that our authors put into their craft."

The Beastie Boys rose to international prominence with their debut album "Licensed to Ill," which has been certified nine times platinum since its initial release in 1986. Since its inception, the group has won three Grammy Awards and four MTV Video Music Awards for their music and performances.
