Barbie and Ken reunite for Valentine's Day - Are you happy for them?
After seven years apart, one of pop culture's largest romances is back on. Mattel Announced on Monday that Barbie and Ken have rekindled their romance after their split in 2004.
On Sunday, Barbie hinted on her Facebook page that she might have someone special just in time for the holiday. "Who knows&maybe I'll have a Valentine this year," she wrote before changing her status to "In a Relationship" on the social networking site on Monday.
"Yes, it's true & @OfficialKen and I are officially together again," she later wrote on her Twitter page. "Thank you dolls for all the congratulations! Ken is my soulmate and we're looking forward to defining our own happily ever after!"
The union caps off a huge campaign by Ken to win back Barbie's love that included public stunts in New York City and Los Angeles. Ken could also be seen on huge billboards asking Barbie to "be mine." Polls were also set up on the pair's Facebook pages encouraging fans to vote if the two should get back together. Ken's efforts were documented on BarbieandKen.com.
However, as Lisa McKnight, vice president of marketing at Mattel explains to Entertainment Weekly, it was their roles on the silver screen that helped them realize how special they were to each other.
"They were reunited as costars, as you know, on the set of 'Toy Story 3.' As we like to put it, they found they were kind of missing each other," McKnight told the magazine. "They had a lot of fun together. Now a little time has passed since the shoot and all the premiere noise around the movie and all that good stuff, and I think they both realized that they're made for each other."
