Avril Lavigne drops new album, 'Goodbye Lullaby' - see track listing, commentary
Avril Lavigne released her fourth studio album, "Goodbye Lullaby," on Tuesday, March 8, 2011, which marks a comeback for the26-year-old Canadian pop punk singer, who last released a major record about four years ago.
The album contains the single "What the Hell," which Lavigne has said that it is the most "pop track on the record."
The tune is "probably one of her most confident and fresh songs, the Los Angeles Times says, calling it "cute, still tuff ... but not as mean-spirited as "Girlfriend."
Lavigne's album was released almost four months after she finalized her divorce from Deryck Whibley of the band Sum 41. The two were married in July 2006. Her heartache may have inspired some of the more pensive tracks in her new album.
"Her usual spunk and sass appear in first single 'What the Hell,' but the majority of 'Goodbye Lullaby' features Lavigne wading poetically into deeper emotional waters and realizing that 'love hurts whether it's right or wrong," music magazine Billboard says.
In the songs "Push" and "Darlin," Lavigne "emulates" fellow Canadian rocker Alanis Morrissette, the New York Times says, later adding in its review: "It's the pop-factory material, not Ms. Lavigne's own presumably more personal songs, that offers details, humor and a sense of letting go. Her grown-up seriousness could use a little more of them."
Lavigne, known for past hits such as "Complicated" and "Sk8ter Boi," released the studio album "The Best Damn Thing" in 2007. The record has sold more than five million copies worldwide. In 2010, she recorded the track "Alice," which was featured on the soundtrack of the 2010 film "Alice in Wonderland."
Lavigne has also keeping busy with her Abbey Dawn clothing line, launched at Kohl's department stores two years ago. The collection, which contains hoodies, dresses, jeans, shoes, accessories and more inspired by Lavigne's own punk rock style, is now available to fans around the world.
