James Cameron speaks to OnTheRedCarpet.com in 2010. James Cameron plans to start writing the scripts for two Avatar sequels next year and he and studio executives hope to release Avatar 2 in 2014 and the third film the following year.

20th Century Fox said on Wednesday that production on the films will begin production in late 2011, the Associated Press reported, adding that like the 2009 film, the highest-grossing movie ever made, the sequels will be shot in 3D.

"In the second and third films, which will be self-contained stories that also fulfill a greater story arc, we will not back off the throttle of Avatar's visual and emotional horsepower, and will continue to explore its themes and characters, which touched the hearts of audiences in all cultures around the world," Cameron said in a statement.

Avatar tells of a soldier's change of loyalties amid a mission to take advantage of the natural resources of peace-loving aliens in a lush planet. The film made some $2.8 billion in box office profits worldwide since it opened in December 2009. Cameron said in September that he plans to set the sequels to Avatar in the oceans of his fictional planet Pandora.
