Ashton Kutcher's pre-split marriage advice: 'Don't wait for a problem'
Ashton Kutcher probably didn't realize his 6-year marriage to Demi Moore would be over when he was interviewed for the December issues of Men's and Women's Health, but the actor did offer some relationship advice.
"I think it's all about working on the relationship and making it better...when it's good," Kutcher told Women's Health, E! News reports. "Don't wait for a problem to work on things. The goal is not to get into a relationship; the goal is to be in a relationship."
Meanwhile, he told Men's Health magazine, "I'm relatively scared of failure. But I just don't see it as something that's inevitable."
In his interview with sister magazine Women's Health, Kutcher also hinted at his own failings in relationships.
"I would just like a woman someday, somewhere, at some point in my life to say to me, 'You're a great listener,'" he added. "Haven't heard it yet, and that's a superior compliment to get from a woman. But I'm going to work on it."
And when asked to finish the sentence, "I could never be with a woman who...," he said, "Wow, that's tough. I could never be with a woman who felt like she needed to change me."
Moore announced that she plans to end her marriage to Kutcher, following reports about his alleged infidelity.
The actress made her announcement in a statement to OnTheRedCarpet.com and other press outlets on Thursday, November 17, days after she celebrated her 49th birthday.
"It is with great sadness and a heavy heart that I have decided to end my six-year marriage to Ashton," she said. "As a woman, a mother and a wife there are certain values and vows that I hold sacred, and it is in this spirit that I have chosen to move forward with my life."
It is unclear if she or Kutcher have filed divorce papers as of yet. The actress' Twitter username, mrskutcher, remains unchanged as of Thursday afternoon.
"I will forever cherish the time I spent with Demi," Kutcher, 33, said on his Twitter page. "Marriage is one of the most difficult things in the world and unfortunately sometimes they fail. Love and Light, AK."
The "Two and a Half Men" actor married Moore in September 2005 after dating her for about two years. The actress was previously married to Bruce Willis, father of her three children, and to singer Freddie Moore.
Rumors that Kutcher allegedly cheated on Moore surfaced online and in tabloid magazine reports in late September. In mid-October, a 22-year-old woman named Sara Leal told Us Weekly in a video interview that she and Kutcher had a one night stand. She said he had told her at the time that he was "separated" and added that her life "has been a mess" ever since the incident.
Kutcher and Moore have not commented about the alleged incident or about the state of their marriage directly but posted cryptic messages online. Kutcher appeared in a video that showed him blasting the media and the way "people can bastardize the truth." He appeared in the clip without his wedding ring.
Kutcher and Moore appeared in public several times since the cheating and breakup rumors surfaced, although they reportedly spent their anniversary apart to attend separate promotional events.
Moore talked about the general complications of marriage in a recent interview to promote her new film, "Another Happy Day." She plays a short-fused second wife who is forced to deal with her husband's ex-wife after one of their children gets married.
"That was the most interesting thing, the unintended pain and hurt that can be caused within a family... and then the need to be heard," Moore told Fox News. "We as human beings have a tendency that, when we are hurt, we want to blame. But when we blame we give our power away. It is so well illustrated (in the film) without being commented or judged. Everyone wants permission to have their pain, and they feel like their pain has been denied."
"We might feel comfortable being in the black or the white, the yes or no, but the truth is we all live in the gray," she added. "We've all been the victim, and we've all been victimized."
