Ashley Judd not running for Senate, wants to focus on family (Poll)

03/27/2013 by Corinne Heller

Following months of political murmurs, Ashley Judd has announced that she does not plan on running for the Kentucky Senate.

The 44-year-old actress said in a statement on Wednesday, March 27, that her "responsibilities and energy" at this time need to be focused" on her family, without elaborating. The news comes two months after she and husband Dario Franchitti, a Scottish racecar driver, announced thatthey are ending their 11-year marriage. They have no children.

She had reportedly considered running as a Democratic candidate against Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, a Republican, in 2014. Judd said in January that she was "certainly taking a close look" at the idea.

Check out Judd's statement, which she posted on Twitter.

"Dear Friends, Thank you for these months of remarkable support & encouragement, for your voices, exhortations, & prayers. I have decided. After serious and thorough contemplation, I realize that my responsibilities & energy at this time need to be focused on my family. Regretfully, I am currently unable to consider a campaign for the Senate.

I have spoken to so many Kentuckians over these last few months who expressed their desire for a fighter for the people & new leader. While that won't be me at this time, I will continue to work as hard as I can to ensure the needs of Kentucky families are met by returning this Senate seat to whom it rightfully belongs: the people & their needs, dreams, and great potential.

Thanks for even considering me as that person & know how much I love our Commonwealth. Thank you!"

In February, following rumors about her interest in a Senate run, conservative super PAC American Crossroads mocked Judd in an attack ad that portrayed the actress as "an Obama-following radical Hollywood liberal," who has forgotten her Kentucky roots.
