Arnold Schwarzenegger still loves Maria Shriver, wants to reconcile
Arnold Schwarzenegger says he still loves his wife Maria Shriver and wants to reconcile with her, more than a year after she filed for divorce amid news that he had fathered a child out of wedlock with a former housekeeper.
Shriver and Schwarzenegger announced their separation in May 2011 after 25 years of marriage and she filed for divorce two months later, after it was revealed that the actor had fathered a son with the couple's former housekeeper, Mildred Baena, while he was married to Shriver. She and Schwarzenegger are parents to two daughters and two sons.
The 65-year-old Austrian actor and former California governor is abroad promoting his latest film, "The Last Stand," his first leading role since serving as California's governor for seven years. He recently talked to the German newspaper Bild, which posted an interview with the actor on Tuesday, January 22.
When asked if he celebrated Christmas with his family, including his wife, Schwarzenegger replied: "Of course! We don't have war. I'm still longing for reconciliation. I still love Maria."
Shriver has not responded.
Schwarzenegger shared details about his cheating scandal in his memoir, "Total Recall: My Unbelievably True Life Story." He also said in the book that he still holds hope for a reunion with Shriver, even though others might "call this denial."
The actor revealed that the day after his term as California governor came to an end, Shriver set up a meeting with a therapist where she made it clear that she was aware of his infidelity. Schwarzenegger said he immediately started groveling, admitting that he had screwed up and telling Shriver that she was the "perfect wife."
The actor also said in his book that he had sex with the housekeeper in the family's guest house in 1996, while the rest of the family was on vacation and he was in Los Angeles filming "Batman and Robin."
Baena talked about her son, said to be the same age as Schwarzenegger's youngest child with Shriver, in an interview with Hello! magazine that was published in mid-June 2011.
