Aretha Franklin talks 85-pound weight loss

03/02/2011 by Corinne Heller

Aretha Franklin says she lost 85 pounds and was once "entirely too fat for words," two months after she underwent surgery for a mysterious ailment.

Aretha, the 68-year-old "Queen of Soul," made her comments in a television interview on "The Wendy Williams Show" on Wednesday. The singer showcased her weight loss at a taped appearance at the 2011 Grammy Awards in mid-February.

Franklin, who has struggled with her weight for many years, says she now avoids food such as pig feet and anything with hot sauce.

"That's off the menu now," Franklin told Williams. "I've been looking at a lot of pictures, you know, and I was saying, 'You were entirely too fat for words. ' I'm getting close to my normal weight. I'm only a dress size away. I was doing everything you could do to lose that weight."

"It's hard," she added. "When you love food and when you've done a high-energy concert, a carrot is not going to work. You can't continue eating things that will hurt you eventually."

She said she lost about 85 pounds, adding: " It was gradual." She did not disclose her current weight.

The singer canceled all concerts and appearances from November through May 2011 by order of her doctors. She underwent surgery on December 2 and said her "problem has been resolved," but did not specify her ailment. Earlier reports said Franklin was suffering from pancreatic cancer. She has not confirmed this.

"I'm feeling wonderful," she told Williams. "I'm feeling great and I couldn't be feeling any better than I am right now."

On February 11, Franklin made her first public appearance since her surgery and told the Associated Press that she was feeling "really great."

Franklin is set to give her first comeback performance in Buffalo, New York on May 28, before performing at the Fox Theatre in Detroit for a three-night stint, starting on June 3rd.

Williams was recently announced as a celebrity contestant on ABC's "Dancing With the Stars." (Check out who else will appear on the upcoming 12th season of the hit ballroom dancing show).

Franklin said she would come sing "Rock Steady" on the program if Williams was a contestant. The interview was taped before the talk show host was named as a cast member.
