Aretha Franklin addresses Beyonce's lip-syncing controversy

Aretha Franklin recently gave her opinion on Beyonce's performance of the national anthem at President Barack Obama's inauguration on Monday, January 21, and Franklin said Beyonce did "a beautiful job" but she found the alleged lip-synching incident funny. Beyonce stirred controversy on Tuesday, January 21, when a spokesperson for the U.S. Marine Band said her performance was pre-recorded. Beyonce has not commented on the matter. "We don't know why the decision was made," U.S. Marine Band spokesperson Kristen DuBois said. "She did not actually sing." Franklin performed at President Obama's first inauguration under similar circumstances in 2005 when she sang "My Country 'Tis of Thee" on a cold day in Washington D.C. The legendary singer told ABC News on January 22 that Beyonce "did a beautiful job" and added, "When I heard the news this evening that she was pre-recorded I really laughed. I thought it was funny because the weather down there was about 46 or 44 degrees and for most singers that is just not good singing weather." The news outlet noted that it was 40 degrees when Beyonce performed the national anthem. "When I heard that I just really cracked up. I thought it was really funny, but she did a beautiful job with the pre-record," Franklin added. "Next time I'll probably do the same." Of her own live inauguration performance Franklin said, "I wanted to give people the real thing and pre-recording never crossed my mind." The singer did say the weather affected her vocal performance. Beyonce's fellow Destiny's Child bandmate Michelle Williams encouraged people to "just let it go" during her appearance on "Good Morning America" on January 24. "That was such a big moment for her and I just wish people would just let it go and just continue to look for what she's going to be bringing for ya'll in the future," she added. "She's got some heat." Beyonce is set to perform during the Super Bowl halftime show on February 3.
