Anthony Hopkins flick 'The Rite' tops weekend box office
01/29/2011 by Olivia Allin
Anthony Hopkins' new horror exorcism flick, "The Rite" has topped Friday's box office with an estimated $5.3 million from 3,022 theaters, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
The movie is about an American priest named Father Lucas Trevant (Hopkins) who travels to Italy to attend a class on exorcism.
The film is based on the book "The Making of a Modern Exorcist" by Rome-based author Matt Baglio. Baglio took a seminar on exorcism at the Vatican and followed a California bishop he met there on over twenty exorcisms for his research. When he only had a book proposal, producers Tripp Vinson and Beau Flynn ("The Exorcism of Emily Rose") purchased the movie rights.
"The Rite" came out in theaters on January 28, 2011.
