'Anchorman 2,' sequel to Will Ferrell comedy, gets release date

We don't know how to put this but this is kind of a big deal.

In exactly one year from now, on Dec. 20, 2013, "Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues," the anticipated sequel to the Will Ferrell comedy "Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy," will hit theaters.

The news was announced by the new film's director and the actor's longtime writing partner and friend, Adam McKay.

"It's official. Anchorman 2 has a release date: December 20, 2013. Very excited," he Tweeted on Wednesday.

The 2004 cult comedy film "Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy" was written by Ferrell and Adam McKay and is set in the 1970s. The movie made $90.5 million worldwide. Ferrell plays Ron Burgundy, a sexist, dimwitted and hilariously offensive San Diego news anchor whose ego is as large as his mustache.

In the first film, Burgundy leads his male co-workers in street brawls with competing news teams and - in traditional Ferrell-McKay fashion - in song. He reads aloud what is displayed on the teleprompter without reviewing a script, allowing for hilarious bloopers, and insists on being the person to end a newscast, by uttering his token phrase, "Say classy, San Diego."

Burgundy acts out after feeling threatened by his new rival and female co-anchor, played by Christina Applegate. The two also cannot deny their attraction for one another.

The "Anchorman" sequel was also co-written by Ferrell and McKay and Judd Apatow returns as a producer. Applegate will reprise her role, as will cast members Steve Carell, Paul Rudd, Fred Willard and David Koechner, who told E! Online in May that the film is "set around the advent of the 24-hour news channel."
