'American Idol's Jessica Sanchez to sing at PBS' National Memorial Day Concert

05/11/2012 by Corinne Heller

Jessica Sanchez, one of the remaining top three contestants on "American Idol," has booked a high-profile gig - she is set to perform at PBS' National Memorial Day Concert in Washington D.C., days after the FOX show's 11th season finale.

The 16-year-old resident of San Diego, California emerged as a frontrunner earlier in the competition and has been praised for her powerful vocals. She was voted off last month but was then saved by the judges in a rare move. Sanchez comes from a military background - her father fought in Iraq and Afghanistan and her grandfather is a retired Navy veteran.

At the Memorial Day concert, she is scheduled to sing the National Anthem and "The Prayer," which she had also performed on "American Idol."

Daughtry, a rock band led by "American Idol" season 4 alum Chris Daughtry, is also set to take the stage. Other celebrity participants include country star Trace Adkins, singer Natalie Cole, actresses Selma Blair and Ellen Burstyn, actors Dennis Franz, Joe Mantegna and Gary Sinise and former Secretary of State Colin Powell.

The concert will take place at the West Lawn of the U.S. Capitol on May 27 and air live on PBS that day at 8 p.m. ET. The season 11 finale of "American Idol" takes place on May 23. Before that, Sanchez and the remaining two finalists, Phillip Phillips of Leesburg, Georgia and Joshua Ledet of Westlake, Louisiana, will perform on the show on Wednesday, May 16.

They are set to sing three songs each - one chosen by the judges, one chosen by show mentor and record executive Jimmy Iovine and a track of their choice. Footage from the three finalists visiting their hometowns and finding out which songs they must sing will be shown.

The following day, on Thursday, May 17, season 8 finalist Adam Lambert will perform his new single "Never Close Our Eyes" and Lisa Marie Presley, daughter of the late Elvis Presley, will perform her new song "You Ain't Seen Nothin' Yet."

Hollie Cavanagh, an 18-year-old British-born Texas resident, was eliminated from "American Idol" on Thursday.
