Alexa Ray Joel, daughter of Billy Joel, addresses overdose, plans to release new single
Alexa Ray Joel, daughter of model Christie Brinkley and singer Billy Joel, addressed her pill overdose in 2009 on The Howard Stern Show on SIRIUS-XM Satellite Radio on Thursday during an interview to promote her new single "Notice Me."
The 24-year-old, who suffered from depression following a breakup with her boyfriend, landed in the hospital on December 5 after she took several Traumeel anti-inflammation tablets, a homeopathic alternative to ibuprofen.
"Isn't Traumeel a gateway drug to vitamin C?" Stern asked on his show.
"You know what the biggest mistake was? I called 911 and I didnt realize those calls would be made public," she said.
Alexa Ray Joel had told ABC's 20/20 news show in June: "I have a flair for the dramatic, OK, I'm an artist. I'm a performer. Did I actually want to die? Absolutely not. I was not suicidal."
The singer, who goes by the nickname Lex, has said she was depressed after splitting from her first love, her former bassist Jimmy Riot, after a four-year relationship.
"He wanted me out of the apartment," she said on 20/20. "He basically kicked me out, You never get over that experience, being kicked out of your home. I was crying every day for two years straight after that and, I was in denial, I was like, 'No, he didn't do that. This didn't happen.' It's, it's like a form of... you're not well."
Alexa Ray Joel attended New York University but dropped out after about a year to pursue her music career. She released a CD called Sketches in 2006 and is working on a new album, set for release in September.
"My first single, 'Notice Me,' is just like a very bright, happy, flirty song," she told ABC's 20/20 news show. "It's very reflective of the place that I'm in now. And then there's the song that does go into my past relationship, and it's sort of like a reflection on masochistic love."
Brinkley and Billy Joel married in 1985 and divorced in 1994. Alexa Ray Joel has inspired some of her Grammy-winning father's songs and says he never pushed her when it came to following in his footsteps.
"I don't feel that's really the pressure," she told Stern. "I feel it's more like the public eye and acceptance and I feel like it's expected that I live up to his legendary status which is like impossible."
But she added Billy Joel did give her some advice, quoting him as saying: "Just cover your bust a little."Check out the official music video for Alexa Ray Joel's single "Notice Me" (Warning: Explicit lyrics):
