Adele to undergo throat surgery, cancels 2011 appearances
Adele announced on Friday that she would have to cancel all 2011 concerts and promotional appearances in order to undergo throat surgery.
"It is with deep regret that Adele has been forced to cancel her remaining live dates and promotional appearances in 2011," read a statement from Adele's official website. "She is to undergo surgery to alleviate the current issues with her throat and a full recovery is expected. As a result, doctors have ordered her to rest her voice and completely recuperate before looking to schedule any work commitments."
The singer has had to cancel and reschedule performances throughout the year. Earlier in the month, she canceled her a U.S. concert run due to a hemorrhage in her vocal chord.
In June, the singer canceled the remaining dates on her tour after falling ill and being told she needed several weeks of "absolute voice rest."
She eventually rescheduled 14 performances on the sold-out North American leg of her tour and added six more to the itinerary after recovering from laryngitis. These performances have since been canceled.
Last month, Adele released a music video for her chart-topping single, "Someone Like You," which showed the Grammy-winning singer walking along a river in Paris, filmed in black and white.
"Someone Like You" was Adele's second consecutive No. 1 single on the Hot 100 charts and made her the first British female singer to have two consecutive No. 1 singles from the same album. According to Billboard, the song also made the "the biggest jump to No. 1 in the chart's 53-year history that wasn't spurred by the release of a single" and was the first voice and piano ballad to top the chart.
Adele performed "Someone Like You" at this year's MTV Video Music Awards and sold 275,000 downloads the following week.
The 23-year-old Grammy Award-winning British singer is best known for her hit song "Rolling In The Deep." The song is featured on Adele's second studio album, "21," and entered the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart 20 weeks ago. More than 2 million digital copies of the song have been sold in the United States.
Adele's "21" remained strong in the Billboard charts for over three months and remains the best-selling album of 2011, selling over 4 million copies.
