Karl Lagerfeld has some harsh words for British pop and soul singer Adele.

The German Chanel designer, known for his trademark sunglasses, said in an interview with the newspaper Metro that while the 23-year-old is "the thing at the moment," she is "a little too fat."

Adele has often been criticized about her weight but had appeared slimmer, particularly around her face, in December, weeks after she underwent surgery on her vocal cords. She has not commented about Lagerfeld's remarks.

Lagerfeld, 78, served as a guest editor for Metro at the newspaper's Paris office and made his comments when asked about his opinion about singer Lana del Rey.

"I prefer Adele and Florence Welch," he said. "But as a modern singer she is not bad. The thing at the moment is Adele. She is a little too fat, but she has a beautiful face and a divine voice."

Lagerfeld talked about his own weight loss in his 2005 book, "The Karl Lagerfeld Diet." He says he lost more than 80 pounds in 13 months.

In 2004, after retailer H&M said that its stores would provide larger sizes of several of his designs, he said: "What I created was fashion for slim, slender people."

In 2009, Lagerfeld told the magazine Focus that "no one wants to see curvy women" on a catwalk, adding: "You've got fat mothers with their bags of chips sitting in front of the television and saying that thin models are ugly," according to broadcaster Deutsche Welle. He made his comments after German magazine Brigitte said it would only publish photographs of "real women" following complaints from readers.

Largerfeld also criticized the "kind of woman" who attended the Royal Wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton in April 2011 in an interview with Style.com, in which he cited "the bad proportions, the ugly hats, the short skirts on fat legs."

LANA DEL REY 'NOT BAD AT ALL'

"Lana Del Rey is not bad at all," Lagerfeld told Metro. "She looks very much like a modern-time singer. In her photos, she is beautiful. Is she a construct with all her implants? She's not alone with implants."

Del Rey, an American indie pop singer, is enjoying success worldwide with her album "Born to Die" and sang on "Saturday Night Live" in January. She appeared distant during her performance, which was criticized by the likes of NBC news personality Brian Williams. Kristin Wiig mocked del Rey on last week's episode of "Saturday Night Live."

The singer has also not responded to Lagerfeld and has not confirmed to have had any "implants" placed in her body.

When asked by Complex magazine in October 2011 if her lips, which appear plump, were real, del Rey said: "I haven't had anything done at all. Anyone who's known me will tell you that. I'm sorry, but I was living in a trailer park for a few years. I didn't even have enough money to buy Cocoa Puffs. It's not like I crawled from under the bridge and got surgery. I'm quite pouty. That's just how I look when I sing."

Adele meanwhile getting ready to perform at the 2012 Grammy Awards on Sunday. This will mark her first time singing live in about five months, when she canceled a sold-out U.S. tour and several UK concerts to undergo vocal cord surgery.

The singer has two Grammys under her belt and is now nominated for Record of the Year, Song of the Year and Best Short Form Music Video for "Rolling In The Deep," Album of the Year and Best Pop Vocal Album for "21" and Best Pop Solo Performance for "Someone Like You."

Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl, whose group is also up for six awards, told the Associated Press he is "glad" his band is competing with the singer in same category. Both are nominated for Album Of The Year.

"It means we've done something right," Grohl said. "I think she gives us all hope. She's made an incredible record, and she's an incredibly talented artist, so maybe it is true that the cream actually rises to the top."
