Adam Sandler: Andy Samberg helped convince me to do 'That's My Boy' (Video)
Adam Sandler says Andy Samberg played a part in his decision to bring "That's My Boy," which sees them play father and son, to the big screen.
Sandler stars as Donny Berger, a man who fathered a son when he was 13 with his teacher (Eva Amurri Martino / Susan Sarandon). Donny's son Todd (Samberg), cut ties with his father after his 18th birthday and 12 years later, is getting ready to marry his fiancee (Leighton Meester). Donny finds out about his son's wedding and tries to reconnect with him to hopefully get help to avoid being jailed for failing to pay $43,000 to the IRS.
"He called me up and said, 'Put me in that thing,'" Sandler, 45, told OnTheRedCarpet.com host Rachel Smith about Samberg.
"My company had it and I didn't really get too jumpy and get excited about it until Andy called me up and said, 'Hey if you ever do that movie ... I was like, 'What movie is he talking about?' And then I read it and said, 'Ooh yeah, that could be a great time and it's a funny script and I love being with that kid," Sandler added.
Both comedians were once cast members on the long-running late night sketch show "Saturday Night Live." Samberg recently announced his departure from the series after seven seasons.
With "That's My Boy," Sandler gets back to the kind of slapstick comedy that helped audiences love him in movies like "Billy Madison," "Happy Gilmore," and "Waterboy." The comedian admits that with this film, "I'm not going to get as many moms" as he has in the past with family-friendly movies like "Grown Ups."
"It's a father who hits the bottle a little bit, he gets a little loose," Sandler said about his character. It's basically a love story of a father and son."
"The father's just trying to desperately get connected again and the son wants nothing to do with him but then realizes maybe there is something decent about the guy," he added.
Sandler is the father of two daughters with wife Jacqueline Samantha Titone. The comedian says his girls, 6-year-old Sadie and 4-year-old Sunny, always come through for Father's Day, which takes place this Sunday.
"My wife and kids will probably take care of me. My kids always do the nicest things for me. My wife always hooks me up," Sandler said. "They write me notes, they make me food, they give me flowers, they give me stuff that they like more than I do but that's fine. And then I tell them about my dad and they have to sit and listen to that."
"That's My Boy" hit theaters on June 15. Check out the trailer below.
