2012 MTV Video Music Awards: Full list of nominees

The nominees for the 2012 MTV Video Music Awards were announced on Tuesday, July 31, and singer Rihanna and rapper Drake lead the pack with five nominations each.

Both Rihanna and Drake are up for the big prize of "Video of the Year" with Rihanna getting two nods in the category for her single "We Found Love" and for her work on Drake's single "Take Care." Drake also got additional nominations for "Best Hip Hop Video," "Best Male Video" and "Best Art Direction.

Rihanna also received nominations for "Best Female Video" and "Best Pop Video."

The two artists have collaborated on tracks for each of their albums in the past, with Drake doing a verse on Rihanna's "What's My Name" and Rihanna on Drake's "Take Care" single.

Rihanna and Drake have also been rumored to have been romantically involved in the past and it was speculated that the songstress was the cause for the June night club fight between the entourages of Drake and Rihanna's ex Chris Brown.

Katy Perry is a close second to Drake and Rihanna with four VMA nods. MTv also announced a new category for the award show. Artists will now compete for "Best Electronic Dance Music Video."

In addition to the big nominations announcement, it was also revealed that boy band One Direction will be performing at the show. Alicia Keys will also perform and debut a song from her upcoming album. Other performers will be announced at a later date.

The 2012 MTV Video Music Awards, air on Thursday, September 6 at 8 p.m. ET/PT. Check out the full list of nominees below.
